Before we look at which food we should avoid for acid reflux elimination, we need to learn a little more about acid reflux. Certain foods can trigger discomfort and symptoms like heartburn in certain people. Acid reflux can also cause stomach pain, a burning in the throat, and indigestion and sometimes a bitter or sour taste in the mouth. If you have these symptoms you should see your doctor for help, especially if it occurs frequently.
Now, the stomach contains acid and it is this acid which helps you to digest the various foods you eat. However in some people, the acid is forced from the stomach up into the esophagus, causing the heartburn symptoms etc. If you have these symptoms, take a note of what you ate before these symptoms occurred, and see if this happens every time you eat these foods.
So, what foods should you avoid if you have acid reflux? Coffee and tea are two of the common culprits, with too much caffeine causing the problem. Try eliminating coffee from your diet, especially at night if acid reflux is stopping you getting a good night’s sleep.
Another food to avoid if you have acid reflux is tomatoes, and tomato based foods like pizza, or lasagna. Now pizza is also heavy with fat which also causes problems for some people’s digestive system, so try to stay away from fried foods too.
Now this acid reflux diet might not sound very attractive to you, but there are a few other things you can try. If you are overweight, losing a few pounds could make a big difference, and you know that you should lose the weight anyway, for the good of your health, so see if you can get to a better weight. Also, you might want to try eating smaller meals, but don’t worry this diet for reflux won’t starve you, as you can eat more often. A little more often than one big meal is easier for your stomach to digest, and with less in the stomach, the stomach acid will not b forced into the esophagus.
Drinking plenty of water is also good for stopping acid reflux, and it is suggested that you drink eight cup fulls each day, where a cup measures 250ml. We all know that drinking water is good for any diet, anyway, not just an acid reflux diet.
Now, there are some drugs that can make an acid reflux problem worse, and these are anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen and aspirin. Some prescription drugs also add to acid reflux problems, so check with your doctor about any of the medications you are taking.
For some people, reducing the stress in their lives can reduce the acid reflux problems, and meditation, deep breathing is a good stress buster, as is exercise like walking or swimming.
So, when you have acid reflux, take a look at what you ate, and try eliminating that food from your diet to see if it makes a difference to your health. See what foods your body reacts to in a negative way, and try to avoid these acid reflux causing foods. And try to eat a healthy diet, and maintain a good level of fitness. You may just find that by staying on a healthy diet and exercising daily your symptoms of acid reflux disappear, and you don’t have to worry about an acid reflux diet as much.
